Modi advises Buddhadeb, Mamata on industrialisation
ECO7Economy/PoliticsModi advises Buddhadeb, Mamata on industrialisationKolkata, Oct 12 IANS Riding high after the relocation of the Nano project to his state, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi Sunday advised his West Bengal counterpart Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and opposition leader Mamata Banerjee on the need for continuous political dialogue and keeping industrialisation above politics. In separate letters to Bhattacharjee and Trinamool Congress chief Banerjee, Modi described the continuity in the Gujarat government's policies on industrialisation and the presence of a responsible opposition as the main reasons for the Tata Motors' small car factory finding a second home in his state after being forced to shut operations in West Bengal's Singur. In the letter to Bhattacharjee, Modi said West Bengal failed to hold on to the project as the state lacked the "work culture" needed for the success of such a venture. "People across the country know your role in West Bengal's industrialisation efforts. But still your state failed to retain the Nano project. The reality is, despite your efforts, the state is yet to develop the work culture needed for the Nano," he said. Modi, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP, has been the favourite whipping boy of the country's Leftists, who have described him as a "butcher" and held him responsible for the death of Muslims during the 2002 communal riots in the western state. Bhattacharjee is a leading figure of the Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI-M, which leads the Left in parliament. In a snub to the Left over the anti-Muslim tag given to him, Modi said the villagers of Sanand had ushered in early Diwali by bursting crackers after land was allotted to the Tatas there. "The sarpanch village head there is a Muslim. He has expressed his gratitude to me and my government."Claiming that his state had always maintained continuity in its industrialisation and developmental policies, Modi attacked the CPI-M, saying: "We don't change such policies at the dictates of the party. We have always stood for industry. So, people find us credible. On the contrary, the Marxists had one time taken an extreme anti-industry stance." "Now, the same party is talking of industries. But your party and administration is not whole-heartedly by your side on these issues," said Modi in the letter carried by the vernacular daily Anandabazar Patrika. In an indirect reference to the dispute in West Bengal over acquiring farmland for the Nano project, Modi said: "The land we gave the Tatas within only two days has already been acquired. So, there is no controversy over giving agricultural land."Modi went on to add: "Since West Bengal mostly has agricultural land, which is lot more than what we have in Gujarat, there is a strong need to continue the dialogue process with the opposition to solve acquisition-related problems. We talk to the opposition in our state throughout the year."In the letter to Banerjee, Modi asked her to shun negative agitations. "Mamataji, we have lot to learn from you. You have lot of calibre. Come, let us desist from negative agitations and work for building India. It is difficult to build something. But one can break that in a minute."ATTENTION EDITORS: OPTIONAL TRIM BEGINS HERE. Modi wrote: "I can tell you, people are now tired of 'Nahin Chalega' obstructionist brand of politics. In Gujarat, the opposition parties never oppose for opposition's sake. So, I feel there is need to change your style of politics."Calling Banerjee his younger sister, Modi said: "Don't become an ultra-left to take on the leftists. But become a rightist and build up a political alternative in the state. Voice the demand for more industries, more roads and more jobs," he added.Tata Motors on Oct 3 announced it was pulling out its Nano project from the troubled Singur region and blamed Banerjee for the "regretful" decision. The auto major's decision came 32 days after it decided to suspend operations in the Singur factory fearing for security of its employees who were manhandled and threatened by Trinamool Congress-led protesters, demanding the return of 400 acres out of the total 997.11 acres taken for the project.Since its inception in May 2006, the project to roll out the Rs.100,000 $2,250 car encountered resistance from the Trinamool Congress-led farmers, protesting the "illegal" acquisition of farmland.--Indo-Asian News Servicessp/sj/dg778 Words*12101920

2008-10-10 06:01:11Your gut can also sense and spit out bitter tasting food
Washington, Oct 10 ANI: Just like the way people have an instantaneous tendency to spit out bitter-tasting food, mammals' small intestine too can sense 'sour' toxins in food - and make their quick expulsion. The study claims that bitterness also slows the digestive process, keeping bad food in the stomach longer and increasing the chances that it will be expelled. The defense system in the gut against dietary toxins also triggers the production of a hormone that makes people feel full, presumably to keep them from eating more of the toxic food. The finding may help scientists in devising improved therapies for ailments ranging from cancer to diabetes, and may also explain why certain isolated populations around the world have adapted to eat and enjoy local foods that taste bad to outsiders and make them sick. Timothy Osborne, molecular biology and biochemistry professor and study senior author, claimed that the, performed with mice, and the results may also have implications in human."We have evolved mechanisms to combat the ingestion of toxins in our food. This provides a framework for an entirely new area of research on how our bodies respond to what is present in our diets," said Osborne. Usually, mammals can detect bitter taste of toxins in food, particularly when they consume a lot of plant material, which tends to contain more bitter-tasting, potentially toxic ingredients than meat. When somebody swallows the toxins, bitter-taste receptors in the gut sense them and trigger the production of a hormone called cholecystokinin that both suppresses appetite and slows the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. It was also found that cholesterol regulates the activity of bitter-taste receptors in the intestine, and diets high in plant material and potential toxins naturally are low in cholesterol, compared to low-toxin, high-cholesterol, meat-based diets. In small intestine cell cultures, low levels of cholesterol triggered a stronger receptor response, while high levels caused a weaker response. The researchers saw the same response in mice that were given drugs to stop the production and absorption of cholesterol. In fact, their receptors were not only more active, their small intestine cells produced two to three times the amount of the appetite-suppressing hormone in the presence of bitter food, compared to normal mice. The scientist could utilise this knowledge to make medicines less bitter, which in turn would allow for increased palatability and quicker absorption. The study has appeared in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. ANI

2008-10-09 23:40:13Durga Puja celebrations come to an end in West Bengal
NAT32National/Religion/SocietyDurga Puja celebrations come to an end in West BengalKolkata, Oct 9 IANS Five days of Durga Puja festivities finally ended as West Bengal bid a tearful adieu to the goddess and her children Thursday, marking another yearlong wait for her autumnal homecoming. The frenzied immersion ceremony of the idols of Durga, accompanied by elaborate processions, dancing, beating of drums and lusty cheers by youngsters, saw people making the most of the carnival. In keeping with the tradition, the idols of Goddess Durga along with those of her children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha and Kartikeya were immersed with much fanfare, after the womenfolk smeared the deities with vermilion. Special pujas were held as the day progressed. Married women prayed for the well-being of their families. Sweets were distributed as friends and relatives wished 'Shubho Bijoya' Happy Bijoya Dasami to each other. In some of the old households in north Kolkata that observe the pujas in the traditional way, the idols were immersed early while big budget community pujas of Kolkata chose to immerse the idols a day or two later. Babughat, on the banks of the Ganga, was teeming with hundreds of people who turned up to watch the grand immersion spectacle as chants of "Balo Durga Mai Ki Jay" Hail, Mother Durga rent the air. Women joined the dance to the beating of drums as the idols were immersed.Around 5,500 pujas were organised in West Bengal, including 4,000 community pujas in Kolkata alone. "We have made elaborate security arrangements for immersion at Babughat and other immersion venues," a police official said.About 5,000 policemen were deployed in the state to cope with the crowds and maintain security. Many marquees chose not to immerse the idols because of a superstition that forbids the immersion of idols on Thursdays.Bijoya Dashami in West Bengal also signifies sweets, homemade goodies and exchange of greetings. It is a special ritual that reaffirms peace and good relations between people. Durga Puja began with enthusiasm Sunday with West Bengal decked up with giant marquees, bright lights and a surge of humanity flocking to savour the best of Indian craftsmanship and culture. Kolkata this time witnessed pujas mostly dominated by varied themes - including the temples of Java, a Santhal village, the Nano factory at Singur and global warming - reflecting social concerns and creativity at its best. --Indo-Asian News Servicebs/rn/jg428 Words09101639
2008-10-09 10:03:11Devotees in West Bengal celebrate Mahanavami
NAT37National/Religion/CultureDevotees in West Bengal celebrate MahanavamiKolkata, Oct 8 IANS Festivities reached a crescendo, as thousands of people resplendent in their finest attire swarmed the streets Wednesday to visit different Durga Puja pandals celebrating Mahanavami across West Bengal. The community puja pandals or marquees in the state drew huge crowds, as the young and the old savoured every moment of the puja spirit, partaking bhog - community feasts of food items offered first to the goddess - and meeting friends and relatives."We've decided to go out and spend the entire day with my friends. We have a plan to dine out at some Bengali restaurant and then we'll visit some pandals which we'd missed in the past three days," said Asim Dutta, a college student in Kolkata. He said: "Some of the marquees like Suruchi Sangha, Behala Natun Dal, Dum Dum Park Tarun Sangha and Ballygunge Pally Sarbojanin were really very good in terms of decoration and ambience. I think most of them were winners of several awards."Mahanavami, or the ninth lunar day, is the concluding day of Durga Puja rituals. The main Mahanavami puja began after the end of Sandhi Puja held at the conjunction of Mahashtami, eighth lunar day, and Mahanavami. In Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga killed two demons, Chand and Mund, at the sandhi or confluence of Mahashtami and Mahanavami. A number of devotees from the non-Bengali communities in West Bengal also observed Mahanavaratri during the auspicious occasion. The Chaltabagan puja pandal in north Kolkata attracted hundreds of people, who appreciated innovative artefacts. The marquee was made of metal wire mesh, a non-inflammable material. The puja was celebrated there in a completely eco-friendly atmosphere by installing hi-tech gadgets like heat sensors and smoke detectors. The organisers of Behala Natun Dal in South East Kolkata modelled their pandal on typical old mansions in the northern part of the city. A dilapidated red-brick zamindar house, the structure with a traditional courtyard, false balconies, ornate grills and chandeliers exuded old-world charm. At Suruchi Sanga in Alipore, the enchanting beauty of Assam was brought out with the melody of Bihu songs, and by presenting a synthesis of the three main streams of Hindu religion, Shaiva, Shakta and Vaishnava, that is found across the northeastern state. Also on display were the cultures of various tribes of Assam like Mising, Deuri, Rabha, Mech, Hajong, Dimasa and Reming. The marquee of the Kalitala Sporting Club in the eastern pockets of Kolkata was inspired by an ancient West African mud mosque in Mali, one of the world heritage sites, built by the Dogon tribe. The pandal was developed with plaster-of-Paris and jute structure pulling a huge crowd on the festive days.Goddess Durga, the slayer of the demon Mahishasur, is lion-borne and wields an array of arms in her 10 hands. Mythology has it that the Puja celebrates the annual descent of the goddess, accompanied by her four children Ganesh, Kartik, Lakshmi and Saraswati, on earth to visit her parents. She stays for four days to eradicate all evil from the earth before returning to her husband Lord Shiva at Kailash on Dashami that falls on Thursday this year.--Indo-Asian News Servicessp-sb/am/dg568 Words*08101748
